A Local’s Guide to Chelan in the Summer

From someone who’s lived it, loved it, and knows where the best wine pours are!
Let’s be real… summer in Chelan just hits different.
Between the sunshine, the wine, and the water, it’s one of those places that turns casual visitors into lifelong vacationers (and sometimes, locals!). I grew up here, and even though I know this valley like the back of my hand, it still gets me every season.
Whether you’re planning your first trip or you’ve been coming every summer since you were in floaties, I’ve rounded up some of my favorite things to do, sip, and see - because let’s face it, sometimes the best recommendations don’t come from Google.
Here’s how I’d spend a summer day in Chelan if I were you.
Start your morning slow
Start the day with coffee and a bag of mini donuts from The Family Bean… you’ll thank me later! Not a donut person? Lake Chelan Artisan Bakery has amazing pastries and bagels worth writing home about!
Once you’re fueled up, take a stroll around the Riverwalk Loop. It’s peaceful, easy, and gives you those “I could live here” vibes that sneak up fast.
Midday = Lake Time, Obviously
Whether you’re renting a boat, floating from a dock, or just dipping your toes in, get in the water! The lake is usually calmest in the morning, so earlier is better if you want to paddleboard or kayak.
Feeling more splashy than serene? Head to Slidewaters - Chelan’s waterpark nestled right above town. It’s great for kids, but honestly, adults have just as much fun. Pack your sunscreen and lean into the chaos.
If you’re not feeling sporty or splashy, grab snacks and claim a shady spot at Don Morse Park or Manson Bay for some high-level people watching and lazy lake lounging.
Where to eat (Local-approved)
Lunch:
Local Myth Pizza - great pies and tons of local wine and beer on tap
Lake Chelan Brewery - laid back with solid food, ice cold beer, and a relaxed vibe
Dinner:
Skip the main attractions and head to Marcella’s Cocina Mexicana. It’s low-key, consistently delicious, and their margaritas are chef’s kiss! The outdoor seating area gives you a front row seat to the best people-watching on Woodin Ave.
Snacks:
Pop into Bear Foods Market for a bag of freshly popped popcorn to keep you company while window shopping. You’ll blend right in with the locals.
Winery time is sacred
If you’re going to taste, do it right! Here are my top three favorite stops that never disappoint:
Benson Vineyards - sweeping lake views and super friendly staff! The Sangiovese is one of my all-time favorite reds.
Hard Row To Hoe - fun atmosphere, bold wines, and some seriously cheeky backstory. Try their Shameless Hussy!
Tsillan Cellars - elegant Tuscan vibes and an on-site restaurant with upscale eats. I haven’t had a wine that I don’t like here!
Pro tip: Book your tasting around golden hour! You’ll get peak views, the best lighting, and the calmest energy.
Wind down like a local
End your day with:
Ice cream from Lakeview Drive-In. The chocolate-vanilla swirl cone is a local favorite!
A peaceful walk on the dock at Manson Bay Park - bonus points if you catch the sunset!
Or, just head back to your rental, put your feet up, and let the warm night air do its thing.
A few local tips:
Bring layers - it cools off at night, even after a 90° day.
Make reservations where you can, especially at wineries or dinner spots!
Skip the chains. Chelan thrives on local love.
Smile and say hi! People here are friendlier than you’d think.
